Just after Christmas I was challenged by the lovely folk at Philips to take part in a juicing challenge to kick start my 2015 in a healthy way. Always one for a challenge, I accepted the mission and immersed myself (not literally) in to juicing in a big way. The 21 day juice plan, set out by Philips and some top nutritionists and trainers, is based around the idea that it takes 21 days to make or break a habit, and with a new healthy outlook on life as well as a change in my diet, I thought it would be the perfect time to jump on the juicing bandwagon.
Philips very kindly equipped me with a nifty juicer and ingredients to make the three weeks worth of juices from their plan, and away I went!
The first thing you may notice is that there’s only 20 juices here. I had to ditch one of the recipes as it contained kiwi fruit which I have a bit of a love hate relationship with (love the taste but I’m allergic to it!) so I swapped it out for one of the previous ones I had already tried. Here’s a run down of the other recipes from the plan…
#01 – Watermelon Cooler: 3/4 watermelon, 1 lime, handful of fresh mint.
#02 – Classic Cleanse: 3 carrots, 1 beetroot, 1 green apple, 2 stalks of celery.
#03 – Beat The Bloat: 3/4 pineapple, 2 green apples, 2 handfuls of fresh mint, 1 lime.
#04 – 4PM Pick Me Up: Handful of spinach, 5 lettuce leaves, 1/4 cucumber, 4 stalks of celery, 1 lemon, 1 red apple, 2cm ginger, 1/2 tsp of cinnamon.
#05 – Super Skin: 7 stalks of celery, 1 apple, 1/2 cucumber, handful of spinach, 5 lettuce leaves, 1 lime.
#06 – Glowing Greens: 3 stalks of celery, 2 handfuls of spinach, 1 pear, 1/2 cucumber, 1 lemon, handful of parsley.
#07 – Stir & Purr: 1 green apple, 7 strawberries, 15 de-stoned cherries, 1/2 cucumber.
#08 – The Early Bird: 2 red apples, 1/2 cucumber, 3 stalks of celery, 1/4 lime, 1cm ginger.
#09 – Beat Me Up: 1 red apple, 1/2 cucumber, 2 stalks of celery, 1 slice of lemon, 1/2 beetroot.
#10 – Pre-Workout Kick: 2 carrots, 1 red apple, 1/2 beetroot, 1 handful of spinach.
#11 – Post-Workout Refuel: 1 handful of spinach, 1/2 cucumber, 1 handful of kale, 1 red apple.
#12 – The Hangover: 1 green apple, 2 stalks of celery, 2 carrots, 1/2 cucumber, 4 mint leaves.
#13 – The Lean Machine: 1 green apple, 1/2 cucumber, 1 handful of kale, 1 handful of spinach, 1 slice of lemon.
#14 – Flu Fighter: 1/2 beetroot, 2 carrots, 1 pear, 1cm ginger.
#15 – Immunity Booster: 2 carrots, 1 green apple, 4 stalks of celery, 1 handful of parsley, 1 clove of garlic.
#16 – Melon Zinger: 1 whole honeydew melon, 2cm of ginger.
#17 – Tropical Tipple: 2 green apples, 2 carrots, 1 peeled dragon fruit.
#18 – Ginger Power: 3 carrots, 1 lemon, 2 green apples, 3cm ginger.
#19 – Great To Be Green: 2 green apples, 1/2 cucumber, 2cm ginger.
#20 – Sunrise Starter: 2 carrots, 2 beetroot, 3cm ginger, 1 lemon, 1 green apple, 1 handful of spinach.
After a few days I had really got in to the routine of making a juice each morning (or evening if I had been working early!) and loved the majority of the recipes. I seem to have developed a hatred for celery along the way though, as any juice that contained it just did not agree with me. A word of warning if you’re not the biggest fan – don’t use as much as stated as it packs quite a powerful flavour!
Other than those I really enjoyed everything, but to be completely honest I don’t think the green juices are for me, and I did struggle to finish the whole glass on a few occasions. Give me a sweet one and it will be gone in seconds though! My favourites of the whole plan were the Watermelon Cooler, Beat The Bloat, Stir & Purr and Melon Zinger. I’ll definitely be re-making these again!
All in all, I’ve really enjoyed taking part in the #RealJuiceReboot and it’s been great to see just how many different fruits and vegetables can be used in juices. It’s really helped with my healthy eating and stopped me from craving fizzy drinks and sugary juices off the shelves, as I can just whizz up my own in seconds! Whether I’ll be making one every single day I’m not sure, but it will definitely be part of my weekend routine when I have more time in the mornings.
Thanks so much to Philips for asking me to get involved!
