ADDING COLOUR TO A WINTER WARDROBE

If you’ve followed me for a while now, or managed to check out my 2017 in outfits post, you’ll have noticed there’s been a huge injection of colour in to my wardrobe in recent months, and I love it! I’ve especially enjoyed adding pops of bright shades in to my Winter looks, as I’d normally have reached for greys and blacks, but I think bright colours can be such mood lifters and add so much more interest to an outfit. The one problem though; they can be SO tricky to style!

I have to admit, if you were to look in to my wardrobe right know you would probably mistake for a five year old’s what with the amount of colour and print in there, so how do you style those pieces in to every day looks to ensure you still look your age?!

GO FOR BOLD: When I choose an item in a bold block colour, I look at the shape and fit of the piece, and try to go for something that’s timeless, that I could see myself wearing for a long time. For example, most of my colourful knitwear is in a simple, clean shape without too much detail. That also helps when it comes to pairing it with other items, as it will usually go with pretty much anything! I have lots of block coloured T shirts, jumpers, shirts and boots that are really easy to fit in to an outfit and are perfect for brightening up some simple denim or a monochrome look.

START OFF SMALL: If large blocks of colour are a little daunting for you or just really aren’t your thing, accessorising an outfit with smaller pops of colour can be just as fun and effective. I love small cross-body bags in bold shades, statement shoes, berets and boots, or even something small like a pair of earrings to add some colour to an outfit. I love to wear all black for a night out, with a pair of bright tasselled earrings and a bold clutch bag for a touch of colour.

PRETTY PRINTS: One of my favourite ways to add some colour to a look is with prints, and the high street is full of some great ones right now. A failsafe favourite of mine has to be stripes, and right now I have 4 or 5 colourful striped knits that are constantly in rotation in my day-to-day wardrobe. For days when I just want a little bit of colour, I have a beautiful black knit with thin rainbow stripes, but when I want to go all out bright I turn to my bold neon pink and red roll neck which sounds super scary, but I’ve never had so many compliments on an item of clothing!

When it comes to dresses or blouse, I love a bold background with a small floral or geometric print over the top to keep things fun and feminine, and I’ll always pair these with simple accessories and more neutral tones.

LAYER UP: One of my favourite things to do with colourful items, is to layer them with other pieces to break them up a little. I love throwing a bright knit over a neutral roll neck top, like in these photos, as it can tone down the colour a little and also add interest (and extra warmth!). Vice versa, wearing a bright roll neck under something more subtle is a great way to add a little bit of colour without going all out. I also love colourful slogan T shirts worn under cardigans or blazers for an effortless day-to-day outfit!

I’ve got my eyes on so many more bright and bold pieces for my wardrobe, and the high street is absolutely full of block colours right now, so if you’re wanting to experiment in some new shades, then now is the time to try! This blue jumper is one of the latest additions to my wardrobe and I love this colour so much. Its super bright and eye catching, and I’ve had so many compliments when I’ve worn it!

I’d love to see your colourful purchases and hear how you style your winter looks!
