Today I went to try on my wedding dress! Not a sample, but the real deal. MY dress! It all felt a little surreal if I’m honest, stepping in to the dress that I’ve waited over a year to arrive in store, and the dress I’ll be wearing in less than five month’s time, but it was so exciting. To mark the occasion I thought it would be a good time to fill you in on where we’re up to, and give you a little progress report on how the whole planning process has been so far. Plus, keep reading to find out how you could win the gorgeous Ivory & Co Wedding Jewellery from Lace & Favour featured in these photos!

So, on to the planning! Personally I think we’ve made pretty good progress over the time we’ve been engaged. It helped that we both had a pretty good idea of what we wanted, where we’d like to get married and who we’d like in our wedding party, so I’d actually say its been pretty plain sailing (aside from a few meltdowns on my side. Dan has been super chilled about everything so far!)

The Venue
Our venue was booked within a month or so of being engaged as we were so certain it was the one for us. We’d actually chatted about it being the perfect place before a proposal had even happened, and when we went as a newly-engaged couple to look around properly, we knew it was the one and didn’t need to look anywhere else. This was obviously one of the biggest expenses, and I’m so pleased that we managed to pay this off ourselves, still with six months to go! Funding the majority of the wedding yourselves can feel like a hugely daunting task, but when the big bills get paid its such a great feeling and gives you an amazing sense of achievement!

The Food
This has probably been the most exciting part of the process, mainly down to the fact that you get to taste so much free food! We’ve booked an amazing catering company who we completely clicked with from the get-go. They ‘get’ us, were quick to put together the perfect menu for us, and couldn’t be more helpful if they tried. We’ve gone for a menu that encompasses some of our favourite foods, from mezze boards to traditional roasts and of course a helping of chocolate! We’re also incredibly grateful for one of my bridesmaids who is making our wedding cake, and after a trial run last week I just know I’ll be hiding in a corner with a huge piece towards the end of the night!

The Outfits
As I said at the beginning of the post, I have a dress! Picking the dress was such a fun experience and one that I thought would take forever as I had such a specific thing in my mind, but in actual fact it was one of the easiest decisions I’ve made. I actually ordered my dress over a year ago now after the search for ‘the one’ ended pretty quickly after stepping in to a wedding fair at our chosen venue, and it being the first thing I clapped eyes on as I walked through the door. I booked my appointment straight away as I completely fell in love with it there and then. It had every single thing I wanted in a dress and more, and was HALF of my budget!! Needless to say, I went to my appointment and knew straight away that it was my dress, even after trying on around 10-15 others, I still went back to my first choice. I must admit, going to see it today had my tummy in knots as over the past twelve months I had started to doubt my decision, but putting it on this afternoon just felt right, and I can’t wait to wear it again!

Dan has now also got his outfit after spotting the perfect suit a couple of weeks ago, and I literally welled up when he tried it on. Now that we’ve both got our outfits sorted, it all somehow seems more real, and seeing him look so lovely made me even more excited for the big day! We’ll be heading back to the tailors where we bought his from soon to pick out something similar for the groomsmen and our dads, and we’re so lucky to have a super talented seamstress as one of our bridesmaids who is going to make some bespoke ties and pocket squares for each of the party to compliment our colour scheme perfectly.

Then of course on to the bridesmaids! We’ve picked out some stunning dresses that we found on ASOS after searching for months, and they are absolute perfection! They compliment my dress in so many ways, they’re a gorgeous colour that will suit them all beautifully and they are such amazing quality for an affordable price. I’d highly recommend checking ASOS out if you’re on the hunt for dresses as they have such a huge range, and returns are free if you need to swap sizes etc. Ours are by Chi Chi, and I don’t think I could have found anything more perfect!

The Stationery
Another one of my favourite parts of planning our wedding has been designing all of our stationery. Whilst there are some beautiful wedding invites out there from some amazing designers, we knew from the start that it would be more affordable for me to design them myself, and being on a tight budget it was definitely the best option. I’m no graphic designer, but I do like to think of myself as a dab hand at photoshop, and I managed to design something that sets the scene for the day perfectly. I’ll be doing a post on these after the wedding so you can see exactly what they turned out like, but we’re both so happy with them. They’re classic and timeless, but have some modern hints and match our colour scheme perfectly. We’re sending them out over the next week, and I’m so excited for our friends and families to see them!

Its so nice to actually write down the things we’ve done so far, as planning such a huge thing can feel incredibly overwhelming at times. Being able to see exactly what we’ve managed to achieve is so reassuring, and of course there’s a lot more to it than what I’ve spoken about here, but I have to keep some of it a surprise! I’m planning on putting together a series of posts after the big day to show you everything in more detail, and talk about everything from the flowers and the entertainment to the photographer and videographers, to give any brides-to-be out there some ideas and supplier names, but for now we’re keeping that under wraps!
