SUMMER TO AUTUMN TRANSITIONAL STYLING

It’s that time of year again, when the weather forecast changes in the blink of an eye making transitional styling an absolute minefield. We’ve all been there (probably most of us in the past week) where you wake up and choose to wear a coat because the heavens have opened. Fast forward an hour and you’re sweating on the commute because hey, the sun’s come out! If like me, you’re also emotionally attached to your summer wardrobe because, well, where has summer even been this year? Then you’ll probably still want to get some wear out of all those pieces you bought earlier this year! Fear not, there are some really easy ways to take your Summer wardrobe through to Autumn and really make it work for the new season. Let me talk you through some of the summer pieces I’ll be wearing for the foreseeable, until the temperatures drop even lower, for some easy transitional styling!

All hail the midi skirt! An absolute style staple that has really grown in popularity over the past couple of years, something I’m SO glad about. Not one for all weather eventualities, I’ll admit, but one that will see you through most. Midi skirts played a big part in my summer wardrobe, but they’re so incredibly versatile that I won’t be kissing goodbye to them anytime soon, if at all for the rest of the year!
There are some in my wardrobe that will inevitably go to the back of the rail for a while due to their loud summer prints and bright citrus colours, but most of them will definitely be reworn numerous times. Block colours, animal prints (so many animal prints!), delicate florals and stripes will all still have a part to play. I’ll be teaming these with lightweight knits and sweatshirts knotted at the waist, or like I have in these photos with a tee layered under a lightweight jacket. Wear with ankle boots for a sophisticated take, or trainers for a casual look. Just watch out for any gales!

The Summer Dress

I’m sure many of us have PLENTY of these in our wardrobes, and I for one went a little overboard on these this year. The promise of sunny weather lured me in! Naturally, these haven’t been worn anywhere near as much as I intended, so I want to be sure to get my money’s worth with some clever transitional styling.
If you follow me on Instagram, you may have actually seen my ‘Five Ways To Wear’ post on this, where I showed you five ways to style your summer dresses for Autumn. You can see it here if you missed it! I style some of my mini and midi dresses over long sleeve roll necks, under sweatshirts, with chunky cardigans and biker jackets. The key to these is to layer! T shirts, roll necks and lightweight jumpers are your friends here, and will quickly transform a summer dress in to a more Autumn appropriate look.

I’ve mentioned it a couple of times already and it might be a bit of an obvious one, but the humble T shirt is your transitional styling hero. I have FAR too many T shirts than I care to admit and I will definitely not be hiding them away for the rest of the year. They are absolutely key for Autumn layering, and I’d never be without them. Wear them under dresses and cami tops for an extra bit of warmth, and throw them on with blazers or jackets like I have here. Long sleeved versions work perfectly too for when temperatures get a little lower!

The Jumpsuit

Another item that has grown in popularity recently is the jumpsuit, and I am obsessed. I have many jumpsuits and love them for work, play and lounging. They’re another versatile piece that was everywhere this summer, so odds on, you have one in your wardrobe! Style these in a similar way to dresses, and layer up with tees, knitwear, sweaters and jackets to really make these work for you through Autumn. I also love to throw a classic white shirt under mine to make them a little more work-appropriate with minimal effort. The jumpsuit’s shorter sister, the playsuit, can also work well in an Autumn wardrobe. I love to pair classic black or subtly patterned playsuits with black tights and black ankle boots. Throw on a blazer and you’ve got a look that is perfect for the office or drinks!

The Accessories

Don’t forget those finishing touches! This summer I went a little wild, stockpiling accessories like a magpie attracted to shiny things. Rings have always been my go-to, but now you’ll find at least 9 or 10 on my fingers at any given time. The latest addition to my collection is the beautiful gold vermeil chunky star set diamond band, gifted from Carrie Elizabeth. I’m so in love with Carrie Elizabeth jewellery, and have got their stunning Moonstone Rings on my wish list!
Another accessory I bought A LOT of this Summer is hairclips! These work so well with many outfits and are something that I’ll definitely be working in to my Autumn wardrobe, especially the pretty pearl ones. Sparkly numbers will also work really well later in the year when I dig out all of those festive sequins!

Needless to say, I’ll be holding on to those summer items for as long as possible! Figuring out what to wear in the morning can be a pain right now, but transitional styling can be pretty easy if you have summer pieces that you still love. A touch of clever layering and swapping out summery shoes for more weather appropriate options is all it takes! Biker jackets and lightweight coats are your friends at this time of year, and don’t forget the umbrella!

What are your favourite styling tips when transitioning from Summer to Autumn? Which pieces will you be sticking with this season?
